Can an incoming 9th-grade Student Be Exempt from Fundamentals of Grammar?
Considering the rigor of Seton's HS English curriculum, it is recommended that any student take and complete Fundamentals of Grammar to ensure they have needed mechanics skills for the extensive writing in the English courses. If the parent/teacher feels the student has already mastered the concepts covered in the course, the student can feel free to take all the tests and skip the practice exercises, thereby confirming their mastery of the content. Additionally, a student can be exempted if they score at least 15/20 on each section of the grammar portion of the placement test.
Note- The student's writing sample is an important snapshot of his/her current writing competence. If the student's writing sample reveals poor grammar and mechanics, this would point toward the student's need to take Fundamentals of Grammar regardless of being enrolled in a foreign language course or placement test results.
