What is the difference between a footnote and an endnote?

The only difference between a footnote and an endnote is where the citation information is placed. Each form still uses superscript numbers to indicate to the reader that the information was taken from a particular source. However, the footnote displays this information at the "foot" or bottom of the paper (hence footnote), but the endnotes give the information on a separate page right after the report ends called the Endnotes page (titled "Endnotes").

It is entirely up to you whether you use endnotes or footnotes. However, you cannot use both endnotes and footnotes together; you must stick to one throughout the report.

Usually, students who use endnotes have a lot of different sources they are referencing, and it would be unwieldy to use footnotes because the numerous footnotes would crowd out the landscape of the paper. Basically, there would be so many footnotes on one page that the actual report would be compressed on each page. In this case, using endnotes makes more sense because you can place all the citations on a separate page (s).
