How to Footnote the Bible

You footnote the Bible in the following manner:

Abbreviation for book of the bible chapter number followed by a colon then verse number (s).

Example Footnote for 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, verse 11, chapter 5, verses 2-5, chapter 5, verse 14:


1 Thess. 4:11, 5:2–5, 5:14.
If this was from the version you described, Revised Standard Edition, you place the abbreviation in parenthesis after the information. However, you only need to specify the version of the bible you are citing in the first footnote; you do not need to keep including the (RSV) in subsequent footnotes.

Footnote example with version information:

1 Thess. 4:11, 5:2–5, 5:14 (RSV).
